The Sport-Gifted Centre at Wingate Institute was established in 1991 and is synonymous with a pursuit of excellence and achievements.
The object is to allow the young sportsmen and women with natural ability to maximize their sporting talent under optimal training conditions and to achieve creditable results in important international tournaments.
The structure of the Center allows these youngsters to intertwine their intensive participation in their sport discipline and the demands placed on them from the educational establishment of Israel.
The Wingate Institute places at the disposal of these young athletes the best training conditions, boarding school, top sport facilities, state-of-the-art fitness gym equipment, a scientific staff for follow up, check up and development programmes, access to the sport medicine and research department on campus, a constant support structure comprising of sport medicine physicians, nutritionists, specialists, physiologists and psychologists, rehabilitation treatment for injuries incurred and a social and educational team second to none.
Acceptance to the Center is based on a very stringent and comprehensive screening process. Those who want to be accepted must be good students and be able to integrate into a boarding school environment. The screening tests include professional ability in your sport discipline, intense and comprehensive medical tests and assessments, a personal interview at the local school and at the Center and attending and passing training camps and clinics where the applicant is judged and deemed suitable to live in a boarding school environment.
The daily regimen includes morning training session between 06.00 to 08.00, showers, breakfast and leave for school at 09.00.
The students return from school at 14.00 where the team meets the youngsters in the dining room, allowing the coaches and the staff to follow up closely on the temperament of the child return from school and oversee his calorie intake. From 14.30 onwards the Center is in “relaxation mode”, the athletes relax in their rooms. Those that require some form of medical attention (sport rehabilitation, psychological counselling) receive it.
Afternoon training sessions begin at 16.00 and include fitness sessions and specific sport branch discipline training session. At 20.00 the athletes gather for dinner and from that time on till “lights out” they concentrate on homework, relax in the social club, socialize or listen quietly to music in their rooms. At 22.30 every athlete is in his room, in bed towards “lights out’ by the educational staff. The working day ends.
Although we provide an environment for maximizing the sport ability of these youngsters, an enormous effort is focused on achieving good results at school. The children learn at one of the top regional high school in the country called “Hof Hasharon” located in Kibbutz Shefayim.
Last year the center opened a “learning center” in the boarding school. Every day during the evening hours and twice a week in the afternoon, tutors arrive to assist the students to make up lost ground in terms of homework and projects – work they could not hand in on time because of training, competitions or participation in overseas tournaments.
